“Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all the others.” – Cicero

A key to retaining customers is building a meaningful relationship. The more valued the customer feels, the greater the likelihood of keeping their business. In fact, people are willing to pay a premium for the feeling of being taken care of. Recently, Oracle did a study that showed 81% of consumers were willing to pay more for a better customer experience. Chances are no matter what service or product you offer, there are many others offering the same service or product. What will set you apart is your ability to foster the relationship.

Thanking clients seems like a no-brainer. Without their patronage, you wouldn’t have a business to run. Yet client attrition is an inevitable reality. What causes a customer to go to a competitor? A 2012 article stated that lose 68% of their customers over perceived indifference. That makes intuitive sense. If the service provider doesn’t care about you, why would you remain loyal to them?

There are many ways to make the customer’s experience better. Thanking them for their business is clearly one of the most important. There are several traditional opportunities when you should thank clients: After the sale and at year’s end. But are those the only times you should be expressing your appreciation?

Technology makes it easier than ever to be in contact with others. There are many occasions over the course of a year when the opportunity is perfect to show gratitude. Taking a moment to communicate with someone on their birthday, or on Memorial Day, Independence Day, or any other special occasion, is guaranteed to bring a smile to their face. That’s the power in connecting with your client, that aspect of consideration that lets them know you’re thinking about them.

“Thank you” is a simple phrase that always makes a difference. A beautifully crafted printed card or a dynamic, animated e card are excellent ways to deliver your heartfelt good wishes.
